Before we had apps and doctors, the moon represented a natural reminder of the flows of our menstrual cycle. Turning to nature, specifically the moon and it's phases can help us reconnect with the rhythms of our body. Instead of looking at our periods as a frustration, we can return to the root of this natural experience and examine our bodies more closely and thoughtfully.
🌝This relationship still exists even in modern era. The average length of the menstrual cycle is 29 days which corresponds to the length of the lunar cycle.
The moon has four primary phases:
🌒Waxing, 🌕Full, 🌖Waning and 🌚New.
A menstruating person's cycle is also broken into four phases:
🌼Follicular, 🌸Ovulatory, 🌺Luteal and 🍂Menstrual.
🌝Each phase can be associated with the energy of the moon, still everyone's cycle is different and might not sync up exactly like these phases. And whether you're synced with the moon or not, we can always explore these phases as ways to meditate on our own process of change throughout each month.
🌛Many studies were performed to see if mid cycle light exposure would shorten the menstrual cycle length of women with long and irregular periods. The women in these studies were instructed to keep the light on while sleeping during days 13-17 of their cycle as a way to stimulate natural moon light. 2 studies found this helped in decreasing the menstrual cycle length from 45 to 33 days.
🌜These studies tell us that light exposure does in fact have a direct impact on menstrual cycle. It's important to start soaking in some moon light post ovulation and reduce white light exposure.
🌝Sleeping with the moon and waking up with the sun🌞 is the first step to bring back the hormones on track. So make it a point to enjoy some moon light especially between 12-18 days and see your cycles change it's course. 🌛💫🌟
